Stan Collymore has warned Manchester United: The manager or the fans have
to change their philosophy.
There is growing unrest among the Old Trafford faithful at
the style of play currently being employed, and they were very much second best to Arsenal during Monday
night’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat.
And Collymore insists something has to change if the
Dutchman is to continue at the helm.
The former Liverpool and England
striker told the Sports Bar: “Van Gaal’s whole philosophy is built around the
Ajax and Barcelona approach of keeping possession. It’s at the opposite end of
the spectrum to the way Manchester United have always played.
“So one of two things has to happen…
“Either Van Gaal has to change the way Manchester United
fans want their football played, which is
attack, attack, attack, taking risks and booing when the ball gets passed
backwards.
“Or Manchester United fans have to embark on what Liverpool
fans had to do in the late 60s and early 70s when Bill Shankly said to them
‘when we play in Europe we’re too gung-ho and we have to be patient’. They
learned patience and they learned the pass and move style of football, so it’s
going to be a fascinating view on a very successful manager in Van Gaal.
“But he either has to take a step towards the Manchester
United way, or Manchester United fans have to take a step towards the Van Gaal
way.
“Something has to give.”
