The Spanish winger was expected to link
up with Louis van Gaal’s side this summer after deciding to leave
Barcelona but he has instead opted to join their Premier League rivals in
a £21m deal.
According to Murphy, it is a wise move
by Pedro, as he believes the World Cup winner will be better off playing under Jose Mourinho than he would Van Gaal.
Speaking on the Colin Murray show, the
former Liverpool and England midfielder said: “I’m not
saying Louis van Gaal would have wasted money and sat him on the bench, but I
bet he would have tweaked him and he would have had to play a certain way.
“At Chelsea he knows he is going to be
playing in a system that Barca play and he has got a manager that gives you a
run in the team.
“From a football perspective, Chelsea is a no-brainer.”
And Murphy believes Chelsea have pulled
off a terrific piece of business with their purchase of Pedro.
The Blues have made a disappointing
start to the season, but Murphy is expecting the 28-year-old to give Mourinho’s
team a big boost.
A three-time Champions League winner, Pedro scored 99
goals in 326 appearances for Barcelona.
“I think he will play every week and I
think he is 15 goals minimum [a season]," said Murphy.
“If you have 15 goals coming from him,
12 or 15 coming from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa getting his
normal 20, then you are sharing the load because Willian doesn’t score enough,
Oscar doesn’t and Cuadrado can’t.
"I think it is a hell of a signing
for Chelsea."
