Jimmy Carter |
Former President Jimmy Carter revealed Thursday that doctors have found four cancerous spots on his brain.
In a press conference, Carter, 90, said that doctors had found “four spots of melanoma on my brain.”
"It’s likely to show up other places in my body in the future," he added.
The vast majority of melanomas, a kind of malignant tumor, are found in
the skin tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic, but a small number are
also found in the internal organs of the body.
The former commander-in-chief said he will undergo the first of several
radiation treatments later Thursday afternoon. He will also begin a
intravenous medication that “enhances the activity of the body’s immune
system.”
Carter’s comments were his first since he disclosed last week that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
Carter said last Thursday that a recent surgery to remove a mass from his liver has revealed that he had cancer.
