Dorcas Talabi, Zonal Coordinator of Osun
State Agricultural Development Programme (OSADEP) in Ife-Ijesa, has
urged the Federal Government to sustain the Growth Enhancement Scheme
(GES) in the agriculture chain.
Talabi, who made the call in a telephone
interview on Wednesday in Osogbo, said that GES had led to the
elimination of intermediaries between farmers and the government in
fertilizer and other farm inputs distribution process.
She said that the scheme had given the
farmers a sense of belonging in government’s assistance programmes to
agriculture, and therefore, urged that it should be allowed to endure
and improved on.
‘’The GES programme has truly enhanced
the productivity of our farmers in all aspects; it all goes a long way
to give them a profound sense of belonging as professionals.
‘’The scheme has tremendously reduced
the hitherto fraud that characterized the process in the past, where
eligible farmers were deprived of necessary farm inputs and fertilizer
to do their farming.
‘’It is obvious that governmental
policies that are masses-friendly always change the fortune of the
common people irrespective of their choice of job,’’ Talabi said.
‘’This is why we are appealing to the
new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to sustain the GES
programme to make the agriculture sector more vibrant and productive.
‘’I am convinced that the scheme has the
potency to restore the status of agriculture as the mainstay of
Nigeria’s economy before the discovery of oil in the 50s,’’ she added.
