Los Angeles police were alerted to the tragedies Monday after receiving
a report about a crying child about 3 p.m., department spokeswoman
Liliana Preciado told the Daily News.
Fire officials busted through a second-floor window to find both the
mother and baby dead as a 2-year-old boy, who was severely dehydrated,
wandered around helplessly.
"It's very sad. He was fending for himself, opening drawers and trying to find food," Preciado said.
Police did not identify the woman or the two boys. But neighbors told KTLA the mother was Erika Tomassian.
She had just adopted the young brothers, Michael and Nathan, Preciado and neighbors said.
The cause of death for Tomassian, who was about 45 years old, was unclear.
She may have been suffering from bronchitis, according to news outlets.
Police said she had visited her doctor just days ago, but the reason
was not disclosed.
Tomassian was raising the two toddlers by herself, authorities said.
