The Force is particularly strong with this trailer.
Disney dropped the final trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,”
the most eagerly awaited film in this or any other galaxy, at halftime
of the Giants-Eagles game on Monday night.
The focus was very much on the trio of new heroes – Daisy Ridley’s
scavenger Rey, John Boyega’s former Stormtrooper Finn and Oscar Isaac’s
X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron – and most importantly Adam Driver’s villainous
Kylo Ren.
Fans got their first chance to hear the wannabe Sith's voice.
“I was ready to do one thing and I’ve got nothing to fight for,” Ren
says to the burnt husk of Darth Vader’s helmet in a scene ripped out of
Shakespeare.
More offense was on display on screen than the Giants showed on the
field: Most of the minute-and-a-half clip was devoted to action
sequences, including a closer look at the lightsaber battle between Finn
and Kylo Ren.
But perhaps the most heartwarming shot for long-time fans was the sight
of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and long-time love Han Solo (Harrison
Ford) embracing.
And Monday evening also marked fans’ first chance to buy advance
tickets, a full two months before “Star Wars: the Force Awakens” hits
theaters on Dec. 18.
The demand was great enough to temporarily crash online ticket broker Fandango and movie theater chain AMC Theaters’ servers.
That’s not a surprise since many industry insiders are expecting it to
rival "Avatar" for the highest grossing film of all time.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, the first installment in a new trilogy, "The
Force Awakens" also sees the return of other original "Star Wars"
trilogy stars Anthony Daniels (C-3P0), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and
Kenny Baker (R2-D2). Newcomers Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie and
Lupita Nyong'o round out the cast.
That the trailer debuted on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” is a perfect
example of this planet’s corporate synergy: the network and Lucasfilm
are both under the Disney corporate umbrella.
