Lithuania 0-3 England
Roy Hodgson, in pursuit
of that tenth win from ten, trialled a young side in Vilnius and Ross Barkley
gave the visitors the lead with a long-rang deflected effort.
Harry Kane then forced Watford goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis to turn his
fierce effort into his own net as England doubled their lead before half time.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain added a powerful third after the
break as the Three Lions easily ensured they completed qualifying blemish-free.
On a night that started with unsavoury images of fans
clashing in the stands, England set about asserting their superiority
instantly.
Kane looked in the mood to vindicate Roy Hodgson’s belief that he is the most natural heir to
Wayne Rooney in attack, and was denied on two occasions by smart
Arlauskis saves in the early stages.
It was another England youngster who would open the scoring
though. Just before the half hour mark Barkley was offered far too much time
from 25 yards, with the Everton midfielder firing
home off the inside of the post with the aid of a slight deflection.
Jack Butland, hoping to impress in Joe Hart’s absence, then
had a rare touch when he clawed away Lukas Spalvis’s dipping strike.
The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes before half
time, with Kane collecting Adam Lallana’s nice flick before seeing his effort
rebound in off the unfortunate Arlauskis after the Spurs striker had rattled
the post.
After the personal disappointment of seeing England’s second
go down as an own goal, Kane was denied twice in quick succession as he pressed
for the goal his performance deserved.
When England did extend their lead it came instead through
Oxlade-Chamberlain 15 minutes into the second half, who
exchanged passes with Kyle Walker before blasting
in at the near post.
Kane and Lallana were then removed for Danny Ings and Dele
Alli, with the former becoming the 31st England player to make their
international debut during Hodgson’s reign.
Ings had a snap shot well saved but the Three Lions took
their foot off the pedal late on, and they will know their Euro 2016
credentials will be put to much sterner tests in friendlies with Spain and
France next month.
