Kim Kardashian is doing what she can to prevent postpartum depression.
The 35-year-old reality star plans to eat her placenta following the birth of her new son, Saint West, she revealed on her app Monday.
"I heard so many stories when I was pregnant with North of moms who
never ate their placenta with their first baby and then had postpartum depression," Kardashian wrote. "But then when they took the pills with their second baby, they did not suffer from depression!"
"So I thought, why not try it?" she continued. "What do I have to lose?"
Kardashian had her placenta freeze-dried and converted into pills in
order to ingest it, and she added she's confident that consuming a bevy
of her own hormones will help her avoid an illness that affects a
surprising number of new mothers.
"I really didn't want the baby blues and thought I can't go wrong with
taking a pill made of my own hormones-made by me, for me."
Kardashian isn't the first member of her famous family to eat her placenta following childbirth. Her oldest sister, Kourtney, did the same earlier this year after having her third child, Reign Aston.
Meanwhile, Kim actually contemplated the practice back in 2013, shortly
after the birth of her daughter North, on an episode of "Keeping Up
with the Kardashians."
Several celebrities, such as reality star Kim Zolciak and actresses
January Jones and Gaby Hoffman, have also opened up about eating their
placentas after giving birth in recent years.
But Dr. Iffath Hoskins, a gynecologist at New York University Langone Medical Center, told the Daily News earlier this year that the practice does not have proven benefits.
"There is no absolutely scientific analysis of this," she said. "It's
five people here, six people here, an actress, a neighbor, a cousin."
