There are headphones that promise great things such as 100% noise cancelation, but then there are those that promise you nirvana.
A new brand of headphones called Nervana
is claiming to have the ability to get users "high" by synchronizing
nerve stimulation and sound. The headphones work by gently sending
electrical pulses to the body's Vagus nerve, which results in triggering a small boost of dopamine in the brain.
The headphones don't work alone, though. They are connected to a generator that produces the nerve signals. When listening to music, the Nervana generator stimulates the nerve and makes users feel calm and relaxed after 15 to 45 minutes of use.
The generator has three stimulating modes: Music, Ambient and Formula.
The Music mode simply plays the music selected while stimulating the Vagus
nerve; The Ambient mode replaces music with sounds from the
environment; and the Formula mode cuts out all noise and just stimulates
the nerve.
"Vagus nerve stimulation has been studied for decades," Richard
Cartledge, co-creator and co-founder, said in a statement. "We wanted to
bring the wellness benefits of Vagus nerve stimulation to more people
in a non-invasive way that is easy for consumers to use on a daily
basis. That's what NERVANA is all about: making people feel good."
Nervana has not been clinically tested, but Vagus nerve stimulation is actually an established science. Doctors have used this procedure before with patients who have epilepsy or depression.
People who have tried using the headphones said they feel a small
tingling on their left ear at first, but then reach a level of euphoria
or just feel a bit lightheaded.
The device is currently available on Indiegogo and can be bought by backing it with $279. They are expected to ship by June.
