Ifeoma stumbled on my journal. Sneak that she is, she just
had to read it. The first thing she saw was my resolutions
page. It was my first entry this year. Amazing how of the five
cardinal points I wrote there, the only one Ifeoma saw was my
weight loss resolution.
She found it so hilarious that just
four months ago, I resolved to work-out on weekends and
completely cut out pizza. One would think she would be content
to laugh alone. No, she had to tell our other flatmates. The
laughter was epic, I’m yet to recover.
You see, I am
not overweight or anything but I’m worried I’m on the way
there, especially because just one year ago I was two sizes
below what I currently wear. This is not completely a bad
thing if you consider the fact that I was really slim back
then. Adding weight was easy. Increased commitment to food and
sleep combined with reduced physical activities and my body
filled out. The problem is it’s filling out a little too much
and I can’t seem to pull the brakes. I pant after a few
minutes’ walk, and climbing a flight of stairs is a major
task. Worst of all, my new size 8 skirts are already straining
at the waist region. My flatmates have of course noticed how
much of a couch potato I have become.
Getting out of this has been
tough, even though all I need is a light workout to keep me
fit in my current body, but it just seems so impossible.
Somewhere between my bed and the couch, I lose my drive to do
anything. But that is changing fast. That Ifeoma’s episode hit
me like a cold bath on a harmattan morning; I was no longer
going to allow laziness and bad choices rule my life. Last
weekend, a friend of mine invited me for ARM Life’s “Dance for
Life” event. I researched into dance exercise routines and
found quite a number. I never knew dancing was so beneficial.
It aids muscle movement, increases circulation and metabolism,
blasting calories at an alarming rate, can you imagine! Even
brisk walks around my house can go a long way to exercise my
joints and keep my mind alive. The best part is they are
totally enjoyable and easy to do. They don’t even require a
special venue or attire; I just plug my ear phones and take
that walk or put on my music and dance in-between chores. I
feel so in control, it is amazing.
It hardly seems so
but the decisions that can improve our lives are the little
ones we mostly overlook. For example, physical fitness can
often be sorted by little tweaks to our lifestyle. Instead of
waiting to hit the gym during your annual leave in five
months’ time, why not set the ball rolling with simple workout
routines around your house. Get in your pair of shorts, turn
on the music and work those muscles. Don’t let time and
circumstances rid you of the life you desire, take charge, be
in control, you deserve to enjoy the benefits of
living.
