And don’t forget to set your reminder for Aggrieved Jackass Day.
Yeah, Heterosexual Pride Day is a thing — a dumb thing.
A backhanded slap by conservative right-wingers at acceptance for the
LGBT community, Heterosexual Pride came of age in the early ’90s
as a
response to the Gay Pride movement born in the ’70s. Along with its not
so subtle message of intolerance, Heterosexual Pride Day is driven by
the sense of copy-cat entitlement: If those gays get a day, we straights
should get a day!
It’s a measure of progress, then, that as Heterosexual Pride Day trends
on Twitter, the reaction has been dominated by slams. “Today’s
#HeterosexualPrideDay, which was previously known globally as ‘every
day.’” “Really? #HeterosexualPrideDayWhat’s next, #BreathingDay today?”
“The reason for Gay Pride is to stand proud and not be intimidated. The
reason for #HeterosexualPrideDay is to intimidate.”
Of course, not every Tweet is like that.
“Cause it’s good to be normal,” tweeted one social-media user, who
added “people are really triggered by suggestions that homosexuality
isn’t normal.”
So, thanks, Heterosexual Pride Day, for reminding us that no matter how big the advances, Gay Pride is a daily imperative.
