Covergirl — Hjab-wearing Beauty Blogger, Makeup Artist joins latest Campaign

Covergirl continues to highlight inclusivity with their newest Covergirl: hajib wearing Muslim makeup artist Nura Afia.

Covergirl announced that their latest brand ambassador would be 24-year-old Afia, a part of their So Lashy! BlastPro mascara campaign.

Afia, a Denver native and the first hijab-wearing model for the brand, will be featured in ads for the mascara, as well as a Times Square billboard that will roll out mid-November.

“We’ve always stood for inclusive beauty that supports any and all types,” Covergirl posted on Instagram, “from skin types to lash types.”

Already a YouTube sensation for her makeup tutorials, Afia’s have reached well past 12 million views.

“People still don’t understand hijab,” Afia told the Daily News. “I’ve read the comments and people say such ignorant things.”

The comments don’t faze her, though. “I’ve grown up with it,” she said, speaking of her family members who don’t wear hijab.

Last month, Covergirl announced their first “CoverBoy” model, 17-year-old James Charles. Covergirl's So Lashy mascara campaign features a diverse array of models, including Charles, singer Katy Perry, actress Sofia Vergara, YouTubers Afia, Chloe and Halle Bailey, and DJ/actress Amy Pham.

There was already backlash through a “Boycott Covergirl” hashtag on Twitter after Charles’ inclusion as male model, but the hashtag has many users declaring the hijab oppressive.

“I think people just need to be more educated in why we wear it,” Afia said. “The majority of women who wear it choose to, it’s not oppression.”

Last year, H&M showed their first ad featuring a Muslim, hijab-wearing model, Spanish clothing company Mango released a Ramandan collection of clothes this past summer, and Dolce & Gabbana released a line of hijab earlier this year.

“There has been so much bad media about Muslims recently,” Afia said, “so it’s refreshing to see something super positive.”
