Tick tock. If you’ve got a Flexible Spending Account , the deadline to
cash it out is around the corner. You’ve got until March 15 to incur
expenses — and March 31 to submit them. So get moving. The only thing
worse than losing money is throwing it away — and that’s what you’ll do
if you don’t empty your FSA. Stumped on how to spend it? Here are a
half-dozen strategies to get you started.
1) Get the kinks rubbed out
Massage therapy has been shown to help not just kinks and aches but
anxiety and insomnia, and it’s covered by FSA. While we’re on the topic
of backs, chiropractic is covered too. A physician's statement letter
may be necessary.
2) Splurge on Rx shades
Prescription sunglasses may seem like a wild luxury, but with the
hourglass running out on your FSA, now’s the time to go for it. And
anyway wearing sunglasses over your eyeglasses just isn’t a good look.
Note: Non-Rx sunglasses aren’t covered.
3) Invest in a First Aid kit
Boy Scouts are always prepared. If you were to get cut, sprain an ankle
or become sick — would you be? First Aid Kits, like this mobile one
from the FSA store, will have you covered.
4) Make workouts work doubletime
If there’s a legit reason why you must exercise — say, arthritis — gym
visits may be covered provided. Win-win. Before you hit the health club
willy nilly, get a statement letter from your doctor. “We’ve written
them for patients when there’s been a medical reason,” a New York doc
told the Daily News.
5) Stock up for safe sex
Condoms are covered. But, guys, before you drop a couple hundred FSA
bucks on Magnums and Trojans and Nows — oh my — note that you may need a
prescription for this expense. Sorry for the cold shower, but check
first.
6) Update sun essentials
Sunscreen doesn’t last forever — more like three years to be at their
max. You know that SPF you’ve been slathering on since you can’t
remember when? It’s high time to toss it and start fresh. SPF 15 or
greater is a covered expense.
