'Biggest Loser' host Bob Harper reflects on heart attack that left him in a coma: ‘I was on that ground, dead’

"The Biggest Loser" host Bob Harper says he was technically dead before being revived after he suffered a type of heart attack that typically ends with much grimmer results.
The 51-year-old exercising guru — who experienced the sudden medical scare while he was working out — says he was extremely fortunate there were doctors present when he went into cardiac arrest.

"I was in full cardiac arrest. I was, I mean — not to be dramatic — I was dead," Harper told host Savannah Guthrie on the "Today" show Tuesday. "I was on that ground, dead."

"I had what they call a 'widow-maker,''' he explained. "It was a 6% survival rate, and the fact that there were doctors in the gym when I had the heart attack saved my life."

Harper suffered the heart attack in February while he was working out at a New York City gym. One of the TV star's coaches found a pair of medical professionals in the gym and got them to perform CPR and use a defibrillator to save him.
The heart attack left Harper, 51, in a coma for two days and hospitalized for over a week. When he woke up from the coma, he recalls feeling frightened and confused because he didn't know where he was or why he was there.

"I was like Dory from 'Finding Nemo' because I had this short-term memory, so I was reliving the heart attack over and over again," he recalled. "I was like, wait, why am I here? What happened to me? And 10 minutes later I was asking the same thing and just getting super emotional."
Harper, who has returned to exercising under medical supervision, says he's doing better now but admits the ordeal has left him rattled.

"It's been hard,'' he said. "I'm going through some depression. You really face your mortality. And I'm really understanding what's important in life."
Harper also promised to never work out in a gym again unless people trained to handle such medical incidents are present. He admitted genetics play a factor in whether a person is at risk of a heart attack and stressed the importance of people keeping close tabs on their health.
Long a fan-favorite trainer on "The Biggest Loser," Harper replaced Alison Sweeney as the show's host in 2016.
