Longstanding speculation about the 28-year-old actor’s death pointed to
the 2008 “Dark Knight” movie, which wrapped just a few months before
his accidental intoxication from prescription drugs.
"I was really shocked, because that was him having fun. Every report
was coming out that he was depressed and that (the role) was taking this
toll on him, and we're going, honestly, it was the absolute opposite.
It couldn't be more wrong,” Kate Ledger told The Telegraph
at the screening of the “I Am Heath Ledger” documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival.
"He had an amazing sense of humor, and I guess maybe only his family and
friends knew that, but he was having fun. He wasn't depressed about the
Joker!"
Ledger was found dead in his apartment on Jan. 22, 2008. Exactly 13
months later, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
His preparation to get into the dark mind of the Batman villain has
often been credited with his death, but friend and dialect coach Gerry
Grennell also said he missed ex Michelle Williams and daughter Matilda.
"He missed his girl, he missed his family, he missed his little girl —
he desperately wanted to see her and hold her and play with her,"
Grennell told People.
"He was desperately unhappy, desperately sad."
