We rely on data to help understand and
build the social infrastructure that make up our communities on
Facebook. Data engineers at Facebook are part of a tightly integrated
team of core technical functions that support every product team at
Facebook. They help product decisions alongside software engineering,
design, product management, data science, research, and others. This
work spurs our empathy for the entire Facebook community so we can make
more informed decisions and develop better products to bring the world
closer together.
We are passionate
about building communities and we take user privacy very seriously.
Millions of people connect and share on Facebook every day. Our goal is
to understand that activity on an aggregate level and then use the
insights to make Facebook safer, more meaningful, and more enjoyable for
our community of 2 billion people.
For
example, understanding data was helpful in making decisions in building
Messenger as a standalone app, focusing on community commerce leading
to the launch of Marketplace, and creating Facebook Lite for feature
phones and within areas of limited network connectivity.
“Why do data engineers join Facebook?”
We caught up with a few team members and here is what they had to say about their experiences at Facebook:
“I
believe Facebook is the best place to do analytics in tech. Our teams
are deeply integrated with engineering and product and things really
change based on our input: From simple things like improving logging to
produce data sets and reports quicker to major decisions about team
direction or whether we launch a product.”
- Alex Schultz, VP of Growth Marketing, Analytics, and Internationalization
“I
really wanted to be in an environment full of brilliant, creative,
highly effective people; an environment that would give me space to
learn and grow. And that is precisely what I love about Facebook.
Opportunities here are endless, and people are constantly encouraged to
take initiative and take risks.” - Enela P., Data Engineer.
“I
love working on product, data and scaling challenges. Facebook provides
unique opportunities to think about innovating on products and scaling
systems. I'm really happy to be in a space where I can work on problems
of scale alongside doing work that is changing lives of billions of
people everyday.” - Rohit G., Data Engineer
“I
joined Facebook so that I could experience working with a large amount
of data that would be hard to match at any other company. It pushes you
to get better and better. It will not only make you a better data
engineer, but a better person.” - Shawna J., Data Engineer.
“I
joined Facebook so I could be myself, grow and learn from the best
people in the industry, and have an opportunity to impact the world!” —
Rajani A., Data Engineer
