It has been widely reported that Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga has superfluously 'inaugurated' himself as president.
Odinga, who delivered a speech after "taking an oath" during the "swearing-in" ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, declared himself as the "people's president," promising to create "a proper democracy" in Kenya.
BBC reported that thousands of Odinga's supporters
attended the event, despite a government warning that it amounted to treason.
Kenyan authorities shut down television stations to prevent live coverage of the event, which is now being described as mocked swearing-in ceremony.
It would be recalled that President Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term last November. He won an election re-run in October, but Odinga boycotted it.
Elections were first held in August but the courts ordered a re-run, saying Kenyatta's victory was marred by irregularities.
Some two months ago, I wrote on this platform on the need for Kenyatta and Odinga to embrace peace in order to move Kenya forward.
Then I wrote: "Kenya has been divided along ethnic lines and the increasing tension in the country's polity is in no one's interest..."
