The star-powered couple's surrogate gave birth early Monday morning to a baby girl, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces, Kardashian revealed on her website.
"Kanye and I are happy to announce the arrival of our healthy,
beautiful baby girl," Kardashian wrote. "We are incredibly grateful to
our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one
could give and to our wonderful doctors and nurses for their special
care."
She did not reveal a name for the new baby. Kardashian was present in
the delivery room during the birth, which took place at Los Angeles'
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to TMZ.
Kardashian, 37, and West, 40, also have a 4-year-old daughter, North,
and a 2-year-old son, Saint. Kardashian wrote in the post that North and
Saint are excited about their new sibling.
It's the first time Kardashian and West have used a surrogate to
welcome a child. Doctors warned Kardashian it would be too risky for her
to try to give birth for a third time. Kardashian experienced issues
with placenta accreta — a condition that occurs when the placenta does
not detach after a child is born — when she delivered both of her first
two children.
The reality star, who has been open with her childbirth struggles,
underwent surgery to improve her chances of carrying a third child, but
the operation was unsuccessful.
“I can’t carry any more kids … it’s the worst,” Kardashian said on an
episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” last year. “It’s not going
to be happy for me … I had a full break down … I give up.”
They confirmed their decision to use a surrogate several months later.
Kardashian and West's surrogate resides in San Diego. Kardashian explained in November that it was more difficult for her to rely on a surrogate than it was to carry her own kids.
