MultiChoice agreed to look into ways of reducing job losses related
to its decision to axe the controversial ANN7 news channel from DStv,
the pay-TV group said this week.
MultiChoice said last week that owing to the “controversies”
associated with ANN7, it would not renew its contract with the channel
in August 2018.....
The Communication Workers Union met with MultiChoice South Africa CEO Calvo
Mawela and other executives on Tuesday. They agreed to establish a team
“to work on practical solutions to reduce the negative impact on loss of
jobs at ANN7”.
“The parties agreed to look at how best ANN7 employees can be
redeployed to the new news channel MultiChoice is commissioning, as well
as within the wider industry,” the firm said.
MultiChoice also launched the bidding process for a replacement 24-hour black-owned news channel on Thursday, to gauge interest.
The group said the channel would need to be a South African,
predominantly English news channel “that takes into account the history,
diversity of cultural background, languages and socioeconomic
circumstances in South Africa”.
The channel should be “independent, nonpartisan, unbiased and
critical”, and MultiChoice would have no editorial control or ownership.
