The 2018 African Drum Festival came to a close yesterday in Abeokuta, Ogun State as the state government planned to build a 20,000-capacity amphitheatre for hosting the annual drum festival.
The
State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun,
expressed his gratitude to all
participating groups, state governments and other international
countries for celebrating the rich African cultural heritage through
drums and music.
Highlights of the closing ceremony was the prize presentations to different winners in various categories.
The governor assured that the amphitheatre would be ready by December 2018 and that the 2019 edition would be held at the facility.
Amosun said government was using the festival to create wealth for the youths, and promote social and economic development.
The 2018 African Drum Festival featured workshop and exhibition, which was held at Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta, with the theme: "Drumming for Advancement, Drumming for Socio-economic Development."
Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, who spoke on the theme, emphasised the essence of drums in Africa and explained how our heritage could be explored for the growth and development of Africa.
