Anger in National Assembly: Senate Invites IGP over Killings and Melaye; House Summons Buhari

Anger and frustration are possible words to explain the atmosphere at the National Assembly on today as members of both the Senate and House of Representatives expressed their feelings over the alarming state of Nigeria's insecurity and the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye.

The Senate Chamber led by Senate President Bukola Saraki resolved to invite the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to brief the plenary in the Committee of the Whole, over the recent killings in Benue, and the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye. Saraki expressed his frustration over his inability to communicate with IGP in the last 48 hours.

"This is also about Law and Order, and as such, we must all condemn this action. For the last 48 hours, I have not been able to reach the IG of Police, we cannot talk about security without collaboration with the Legislature," he said. Some senators have, however, visited Melaye at the National Hospital, Abuja.

The House of Representatives led by Speaker Yakubu Dogara has also summoned President Muhammadu Buhari to explain why the country is no longer safe. The decision to summon Buhari was approved by a majority members of the House.
