The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has advised the government
to institute effective cancer prevention and control strategies aimed at
reversing the rising incidence of cancer , a major killer of Nigerians
as a matter of urgency.
The NMA stated this in a communique issued after her NEC meeting in Uyo.
The
communique signed by the President of the association, Dr Francis
Faduyile and Secretary, Dr Olumayiwa Odusote, further expressed
disappoinment with the management of LUTH over it's failure to pay four
months salary arrears owed doctors and other health workers who are
owed eight months salaray arrears and the casualization of doctors at
FMC Umuahia.
It considered the action as unfair, irritable and a
contravention of the civil service tenets and natural justice.
The
association appealed to government at all levels to ensure that yellow
fever vaccinces are readily available for immunization of all Nigerians
especially at epidemic zones.
It called on all agencies involved in
curtailing the epidemic oral haemorrhagic diseases in Nigeria as well as
yellow fever to work swiftly to curtail the spread and prevent further
outbreaks of the disease in Nigeria.
Other resolutions reached
at the NEC meeting include the need for doctors to be conversant with
the provisions of the medical and dental practitioners act cap M8, 2004
laws of the federal republic of Nigeria as a guide in the practice of
medicine.
The NEC also appreciated Akwa Ibom State Governor,
Dcn Udom Emmanuel for his remarkable strides in improving healthcare
delivery in the state through upgrade of secondary health institutions
and passage of appropriate health legislations while congratulating him
on the award of Health Care Ambassador in Nigeria.
