A National Assembly/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State capital Friday sacked Dino Melaye as the Senator, representing Kogi West Senatorial District.
The tribunal, in its ruling, ordered that fresh elections be conducted in the district.
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, Smart Adeyemi, had approached the tribunal to challenge Melaye’s victory at the National Assembly poll held on February 23.
Adeyemi, in his petition, alleged that the election was marred with irregularities, over-voting and non-compliance with the electoral acts.
Reacting to the ruling, Dino Melaye said: "On Tribunal judgement. There is no cause for alarm at all. Even if it went my way, they (my opponents) will still go to the Appeal Court.
Justice A. O. Chijioke, leading a three-man panel, in a unanimous judgement, upheld Adeyemi’s petition and ordered for fresh election in the district.
"Our mandate can not be taken away from us. We will get judgment at the Appeal Court. There will only be a fresh election in Kogi West when I become governor of Kogi State, when the position will be declared vacant constitutionally. For my Senate mandate, no shaking."
