Unemployment in the UK fell by 60,000 between October and December to 1.69 million, according to the Office for National Statistics.

 

The rate of unemployment was unchanged from a month ago at 5.1%, maintaining a decade-low rate.

More than 31.4 million people are in work, the highest figure since records began in 1971.

But ONS statistician Nick Palmer said that growth in people's earnings was still slow.

UK jobless rate at 10-year low but wage growth slows

The rate hit 5.1% in the three months to November - its lowest rate since the three months to October 2005, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The number of people out of work fell by 99,000 to 1.68 million in the three-month period.

 

Average weekly earnings, including bonuses, were up 2%, the slowest increase since February.

The 2% growth in wages was below the 2.1% growth forecast in a Reuters survey.

Excluding bonuses, average weekly earnings growth slowed to 1.9% in the three months, the ONS said.

MORE than a decade ago, I was in a job in which if I had sat down at my desk and worked for 100 hours straight, I would be only slightly less behind than when I started. I was a newspaper editor, stuck in the never-ending grind that caused me to begin having a regular daydream.
