Financial Aid for Syria's neighbours -World Bank

Bank officials say there is a substantial financial burden being borne by Lebanon and Jordan.

They are discussing help from rich countries and from Gulf nations.

They say the idea has been well received by potential contributors and hope to have the first funds paid out in four to six months.

 

The arrangement under discussion is one in which the Bank would make loans to Jordan and Lebanon, with aid donors covering at least some of the interest costs.

The hope of a future free from war greeted thousands of haggard migrants as they unloaded from packed train cars Sunday in Austria and Germany.

The welcoming cheers that comforted the refugees were echoed in Vatican City by Pope Francis, who called on Catholics across Europe to aid and house the travel-weary wanderers.

“May every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe host a family, starting with my Diocese of Rome,” Francis said.

The Vatican will shelter two refugee families, the pontiff said Sunday.
