Tragedy of Education set for repeat in unhealthy farce

IN 1995, buoyed by an overdeveloped sense of boundless possibilities, SA embarked on much needed reform of our racially segregated, unequal education system. The African National Congress (ANC) settled on a first-class Rolls-Royce curriculum that was called outcomes-based education, grafted on to third-class infrastructure and — save for those at the nation’s elite public and private schools — a desperately underprepared teacher corps. The result was as predictable as it was tragic: today our education rankings are among the worst in the world.

Ghana: Teacher absenteeism in drops to 9% – Council

Teacher absenteeism has dropped to nine per cent, the National Teaching Council, has announced.

 

 

Dr Augustine Tawiah, Executive-Director of the Council, said this is a significant improvement in a country which had over the years recorded 27 per cent teacher absenteeism.

Financial Aid for Syria's neighbours -World Bank

Bank officials say there is a substantial financial burden being borne by Lebanon and Jordan.

They are discussing help from rich countries and from Gulf nations.

They say the idea has been well received by potential contributors and hope to have the first funds paid out in four to six months.

 

The arrangement under discussion is one in which the Bank would make loans to Jordan and Lebanon, with aid donors covering at least some of the interest costs.

Exposure of Corruption at Joburg School by MEC

The former school governing body (SGB) and principal of Glenvista High School in Johannesburg squandered millions of rands in school funds on airline tickets and payments for timeshares and a holiday home, a forensic investigation released by Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi revealed on Monday. 

 

The governing body implicated was in charge of affairs at the school between 2012 and mid 2014, said Lesufi. 

Battle between APC, PDP over $5.5bn NLNG Dividend

ABUJA—THE All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday, asked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to account for $5.5 billion realised from Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) since 2004.

 

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also called on the Federal Government to urgently unravel what happened to the past Company Income Tax/Education tax as well as dividends paid to the Nigerian government by the NLNG, against the background of published reports that the funds were never paid into the Federation Account as they should have been.

The Dangers of Gamification

Jane McGonigal’s book Reality is Broken talks about the benefits of turning uninspiring tasks into an act of play - that is, gamification. McGonigal’s book encourages us to adapt the structures of those games - rewards, measurements, social engagement, quests, and so forth - to our daily lives. I have taken this to heart with my blog and volunteer work … and felt vindicated for the thousands of hours spent playing on my PC.

However, I suspect McGonigal is just formalizing something that most of us already do. To motivate myself to do my taxes, for instance, I have to frame it as the type of challenge in which I could take some pride. I set up some charts with the details of my bank accounts, bonds, superannuation, and student debt in Microsoft Excel, and then I’ll let myself spend a few hours just graphing it all.

Punishing pupils for bad behaviour with humiliation or by administering corporal punishment only aggravates disciplinary problems at schools, a new research paper has suggested. 

 

What was required at schools was an approach to discipline which considered the personal circumstances and needs of children, a senior social work lecturer at the University of the Free State, Roelf Reyneke, argued in his paper.

Nigeria, others miss 2015 goal of primary schooling for all

Only half of countries have achieved a global target of getting all children into primary school by 2015, some 58 million youngsters are still getting no education at all, but more girls are going to school, the United Nations said on Thursday.

Just one third of countries have met a 2015 deadline for six key educational goals agreed by governments in 2000, the U.N. educational arm UNESCO said in a report. Niger, Chad, Pakistan, Nigeria and Ethiopia are among those which are way off target.

Three quarters of countries have also failed to reach the target of halving illiteracy, UNESCO research showed.
