Lawsuit: Appeal to allow alleged victims of bread cartel to sue Premier is withdrawn

A GROUP of civil society organisations along with the Competition Commission have withdrawn their Constitutional Court appeal‚ which they had hoped would enable victims in the Western Cape bread price-fixing cartel to sue Premier Foods.

The Constitutional Court was expected to hear the matter on Tuesday but the parties withdrew their application last week.

They had planned to challenge a Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling that effectively let Premier Foods off the hook for its role in the 2006 bread cartel‚ by setting aside a declaration that opened it up to lawsuits.

MTN on Wednesday withdrew its lawsuit against the Nigerian Communications Commission over N1.04tn ($5.2bn) fine and paid N50bn ($250m) towards a probable settlement.

But the Federal Government said the next line of action would be determined after verifying the MTN’s payment claim.

The telecommunications company said its decision was based on renewed steps towards a negotiated settlement and to create a good atmosphere for further negotiations.

A model who filed a police report in January claiming she was drugged and sexually assaulted by Bill Cosby at the Playboy mansion in 2008 filed a civil lawsuit Tuesday against the fallen comic.

Chloe Goins, 24, claims in the lawsuit that Cosby spiked her drink and she “blacked out” during a party at the famed den of debauchery when she was only a teen. She "immediately began feeling sick to her stomach and dizzy" after drinking a beverage that Cosby handed to her, according to the suit.
