Newcomer, J’ Re My
is a multi talented artist who wants to replicate his growing success in
fashion design into his passion for music. After putting his musical ambitions
on hold for several years, the contemporary and urban singer has return to the
music with the release of his titled ‘Coz Ov You’ and other bonus tracks such
as ’Hw3 Woho Yiye’ ,’3y3 Mo’ and ‘Afia Donkor’.
Born Jeremiah Kofi
Obuobi in Tema, he uses the stage name J’ Re My (pronounced Jay’ Reh My). He
started performing at Star Junior
Secondary School in 1996, where he
was nicknamed Buju because he was able to imitate Buju Banton’s voice on
several of the songs on Buju’s debut album. Upon entering Senior
Secondary School in Temasco, he
changed his nickname to Culio, a memento to Coolio of ‘Gangster’s Paradise’
fame. In 1998, he started to perform his own songs during Entertainment in
Temasco. With the now famous DJ Mensah as his Entertainment Prefect, he often
got the chance to perform at most entertainment shows on campus. J’ Re My later
joined the group, Camp Yard
(now R2bees) but opted out and formed a new group with the stage name, Broken
Silence. By 1999, he had become very popular on campus; he represented Temasco
in an AIDS Awareness Music Competition that he won for his school.
As part of a Temasco
final year funfair in 2000, he was asked by the head prefect to perform a free
style on HIV/AIDS Awareness on air at Adom FM with Dr. Duncan as
presenter. In Tema Community 5, where he resided, he came across most of
the stars of the late 90s. Namely Blaconi (UK), Roko Banton (USA),Root Eye,Nana
Fynn, Akasakyerema and others. These names became his mentors in the industry
so there was no way he could not have been influenced by Quality music. He
entered Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2002 and later
met John Foley (now Jay Foley) in 2003. Back then, John was a sound engineer
and a rap artist, so J’ Re My managed to record two songs in his start-up
studio in 2004.
J’ Relly My out with ‘Coz Ov You’ and more
J’ Re My later
decided to concentrate on his Clothing Line called @ObjClothing and
Accessories, and temporarily halted his active participation in music between
2006-2009. During this period he worked with the BBC
twice designing and producing the trophies for their 2007 Africa Radio Awards
and in 2008 the BBC African footballer of
the year trophy, which Emmanuel Adebayor won. He won a ticket to South
Africa as the first runner-up to Ghana’s
Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year 2008, organized by the British Council in Ghana.
Finally, MTV Base, as part of their Road to Mama Show in 2009, granted him a
free MTV Base interview for clothing old time classmates R2Bees.
In March 2010, J’ Re
My decided to create a music genre in a way to preserve the fundamental
Ghanaian highlife music so that it would still have a foreign appeal. He called
this genre PopHighlife, basically a kind of urban music that gets an artiste to
make a highlife song with lots of proverbs on a hip hop, rock or pop beat.
