The Third Round of the Capital One Cup gets under way on Tuesday with
10 matches, before a further six games the following day.
Round 2 of the Cup was the certainly the round of the scalp, with no
less than six Football League sides upsetting Premier League opposition to
progress.
Manchester City also return to the competition as holders following
their 3-1 win over Sunderland at Wembley back in March, taking on Sheffield
Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium in Round 3.
There are two all-Championship fixtures on Tuesday, with Cardiff City
hosting Bournemouth and Reading making the trip north to Derby County.
Five Sky Bet League 1 sides enjoyed Second Round victories, with MK
Dons the pick of the bunch having recorded one of the most memorable results in
the history of the League Cup, beating Manchester United 4-0 at Stadiummk.
Shrewsbury and Burton Albion are the only remaining Sky Bet League 2
clubs in the competition, and host higher-league opposition once more in
Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.
Middlesbrough’s visit to eight-time winners Liverpool will be shown
live on Sky Sports on Tuesday, while Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest
will meet in front of the cameras on Wednesday.
Another notable fixture sees an all-Premier League clash between
Arsenal and Southampton. The Gunners will be looking to extend their strong
record against their visitors in the competition. Arsene Wenger’s men have
never lost to the Saints in the League Cup, winning four and drawing two of
their six meetings.
Last season’s runners-up Sunderland face Stoke City at the Stadium of
Light, and have also never recorded a League Cup win over Tuesday’s opposition
in their history, losing both of their two fixtures against them.
