Daily Salt Consumption in US Children Is Higher

Than Recommended, Says CDC

According to the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, among ten kids, between the ages 6 and 18, nine consume salt in much higher quantities than recommended.

The results were concluded by analyzing the data of the national surveys conducted in the years 2009 and 2010. They showed that the children consumed 3,300 mg of sodium on daily basis even prior to the salt addition in meal. The daily sodium consumption recommendation is less than 2,300 mg.

According to CDC, 65 percent of the salt consumed from the store food, fast food comprised 13 per cent of sodium and meals provided at school accounted for 9 percent. CDC further reported that 40 percent of the consumed sodium came from processed food like nuggets, potato chips, pizza etc.

Sodium consumption was reported to be highest at dinner with 40 percent intake regularly.
Health experts believe that reducing sodium consumption at younger age could improve health in later stages of life.
