US firms add 223,000 jobs in April

At the same time, the US Department of Labor said the unemployment rate dropped to a seven-year low of 5.4%, as against 5.5% the previous month.

The total was a big improvement on March's payroll figures, which were revised to show a gain of just 85,000 jobs.

Investors are expected to pay close attention to these figures. Many believe the Federal Reserve will take recent signs that the economy is improving as a signal to raise interest rates as soon as next month.
