Sterling, close to sealing a £49million move to City, has
faced stinging criticism for the way he has attempted to engineer his exit from
Liverpool and the majority of Reds supporters
will be glad to see the back of him.
But Pearce, who managed the 20-year-old during his time in
charge of the England Under-21s, insists Sterling is not the troublesome
character he is perceived to be and has suggested he has been badly advised by
those around him.
“I wouldn’t put Sterling in the category of a problem
player,” Pearce told the Alan Brazil
Sports Breakfast.
“I don’t think you would have a moment's problem with him in
terms of him being a real pain and thinking you don’t want to see his face when
he walks through the training ground in the morning. I have certainly not found
him that way inclined when I have worked with him.
“As a kid, he is a pleasant kid, maybe misguided by those around
him but in the main he is not a problem.”
