After three straight wins took United to the top of the Premier League, Van
Gaal’s men were brought back down to earth with a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal.
The Emirates loss made for a long international break for
the Dutchman, who has been keen to eradicate errors from his men before the
trip to Everton on Saturday.
But many members of the squad have since flown around the
world during the international period, which has given the manager little time
to repair the damage in training.
"It is awful when you have such a result," Van
Gaal said. "It has been an awful two weeks.
"Before the last international break in September we
lost against Swansea. These are awful weeks.
"You are constantly thinking about how it happened. You
cannot manage it with your players. That is what you have to do as a manager.”
The Gunners were 3-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes and
the United boss is hoping his side can start quickly this time around.
He said: "There are a lot of differences but the big
difference was the start of the game.
"Arsenal had an accuracy of
passes - 96 per cent. Normally Manchester United have that. We have 68 per
cent. Our average is 85 per cent or higher, I believe.
"That is a big difference. After a quarter it was that
we have already 90 per cent. But by then it is already 3-0 and we have lost the
game. We have spoken about that. It cannot happen again.”
United have not enjoyed recent trips to Goodison Park,
having won just twice in their last eight visits, but they are determined to
bounce back.
Asked how he was feeling ahead of the clash, Van Gaal added:
"I have seen the training sessions. I have seen the reaction of my
players, so I am confident.”
Van Gaal has been provided with a welcome boost ahead of the
clash, as captain Wayne Rooney is set to feature after an ankle problem
