Staff Who Allowed Deadly Terror Drill got Probes by Kenyan University

As many as eight senior administrators at a Kenyan university may be asked to resign after they approved a terror-attack drill that sparked panic and resulted in an employee’s death, the vice chancellor said.

About 30 people were admitted to various hospitals with injuries after Monday’s security drill at Strathmore University, the country’s leading business school, in the capital, Nairobi. A 33-year-old woman died after jumping from a third-floor window.

“The University Council investigation will say who has to resign -- it’s preemptive of me to say who,” Vice Chancellor John Odhiambo told reporters Wednesday in Nairobi. He said that “either by design or omission” he hadn’t been informed a drill was to take place, nor were all students aware one was due.

At least 147 people died in April when Islamist-militant gunmen attacked Garissa University in northeastern Kenya. The same month, a student died in a stampede at the University of Nairobi when an exploding electricity transformer was mistaken for gunfire.
