There’s an elephant in the room, and as far as Caitlyn Jenner is
concerned, it has more to do with her Republican politics than her
gender identity.
“I have gotten more flak for being a conservative Republican than I
have for being trans,” the “I Am Cait” star and transgender icon told
students at the University of Pennsylvania Wednesday night.
The topic was broached by a student who asked the former Olympic
champion about why she didn’t belong to the Democratic Party, which is
much more supportive of transgender rights, according to a writer in attendance for billypenn.com.
“Just because you change gender doesn’t mean you change your core beliefs,” Jenner responded.
The 66-year-old reality star, who visited the White House during the
Reagan administration, has been jumping hurdles for the right ever since
she was jumping hurdles as Bruce Jenner.
But that shouldn’t come as a surprise to any LGBT activists who are
unhappy with her loyalty to a party in which a vocal contingent of
members are offended by the idea of gender transitioning.
“There’s a lot of different shades from both sides of the aisle,” said
Christian Toto, editor of conservative culture site HollywoodInToto.com.
Jenner admitted during an interview on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last
year that she was a “traditionalist” who did not support gay marriage
before her own transition.
“At this point Democrats have been painted as the party of LGBT issues,
but there are plenty of Republicans that believe, ‘live and let live.’”
Before he ended his White House run in December, then-GOP presidential
candidate Lindsay Graham voiced his support for his fellow conservative.
“If Caitlyn Jenner wants to be a Republican, she is welcome in my party,” Graham said last year.
