Manchester United FC news:
Jose Mourinho to Manchester United – it is now surely a case of
when rather than if.
The Portuguese boss is set to replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford,
less than a week after the club's first FA Cup success since 2004.
The 53-year-old and agent Jorge Mendes are in negotiations with the Red Devils
and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, so what is the
latest?
Terms agreed
According to Sky Sports, Mourinho and Mendes have agreed
terms with Woodward, successfully negotiating contract length and salary for
the former Chelsea boss.
Image rights
The main issue so far has been agreeing terms on image
rights and the two parties are set to meet in London on Wednesday to iron out
the finer details.
The contract cannot be signed before these issues are
resolved and some of these include Mourinho’s deal with Jaguar – United’s shirt
sponsor is car manufacturer Chevrolet – and the fact the two parties have
different watch partners. Other existing commercial deals, however, such as
Adidas, the sportswear giant with a
10-year kit deal with United, has Mourinho as a global
ambassador.
According to the Independent, Chelsea still own the rights to
Mourinho's name and that ownership will expire in 2025. That news has
complicated the deal slightly, but is unlikely to lead to a breakdown in
negotiations.
Transfers
During Tuesday’s discussions, Mourinho was keen to get
assurances on player recruitment and the Red Devils’ transfer strategy, the
London Evening Standard reports.
Their previous attempts to sign players has reportedly been
delayed while they get the go-ahead from their owners in America and the
Portuguese wants a similar level of backing in transfers Sir Alex Ferguson was given.
Rui Faria
Mourinho's right-hand man, Faria has been his assistant at Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid and he is set to follow him to Old
Trafford. The 40-year-old was seen with Mourinho outside his London home in
Monday, fuelling speculation they will team up once again.
What next for Ryan Giggs? The Welshman
is contracted at Old Trafford, but where will he fit in Mourinho's plans if he
wants Faria as his number two? That is a question that may also pop up
towards the end of negotiations.
