Raise a glass to the summertime blues.
Move over, rosé -- six 20-something Spanish entrepreneurs have come up
with the Instagram-ready swirl of the season: a deep indigo wine that
one imagines Smurfette would go gaga over. And probably Millennials.
The mad scientists behind the buzzworthy Blue Nun wine from Gik Live
spent two years collaborating with the University of the Basque Country
and Food Tech research departments to perfect their blend of red and
white grapes from the La Rioja, Castilla-La Mancha, León and Zaragoza
regions of Spain. The unnatural electric blue hue is enhanced by adding
organic indigo and anthocyanin pigments.
“Try to forget all you know about wine,” the Spanish startup’s creators
announce in their press kit. You might have to: This insane concoction
bears little resemblance to the drink we know and love. It’s not aged,
and it’s sweetened with non-caloric sweeteners - not, they emphasize,
with sugar. They recommend sipping it chilled, and swear its “slightly
acid, with a sudden cheerful, sweet burst” tasting notes pair well with,
well, everything: sushi, guacamole and nachos, tzatziki sauce, pasta
carbonara and smoked salmon.
Blue Nun is only available in Spain for now, but will be spilling over to other countries, including the U.S., this summer.
Oh, the creators have also made a playlist to enjoy while drinking
this, including Fryars “Cool Like Me,” James Blake “Stop What You’re
Doing” and Minus the Bear “Pachuca Sunrise.” Because, blue wine.
The Spanish startup crafted the blue raspberry Slurpee-colored
confection for the free-spirited tipplers bored with basic red, white
and rose wines (again, Millennials).
“Drinking Gik is not just about drinking blue wine, you are drinking
innovation,” reads the press release. “You are drinking creation. You
are breaking the rules and creating your own ones. You are reinventing
traditions.”
Or you are just drinking fermented Smurf juice. Bottoms up! And (probably) brace yourself for blue teeth.
