The film version of "Training Day" saw Denzel Washington bag an Oscar —
but at the time some L.A. detectives claimed that the gritty drama bore
no resemblance to the reality of the streets.
Now CBS has taken over the subject matter with a TV series loosely
based on the movie, and it too might rub some cops the wrong way.
New Jersey-born actress Katrina Law says that the series focusing on
the LAPD's vice squad will probably cause some controversy.
And the new pilot, which debuts in February, will highlight the current
battles being waged between cops and different communities.
Law, who plays Detective Rebecca Lee, says that Washington is backing
the series, but will not make any kind of cameo - given that his
character died in the finale scene of the 2001 classic.
Speaking in LA, Law said: "I think fans can expect a lot of
controversy. I think "Training Day" is built on controversy. It's the
line in the sand of what's acceptable behavior for our police force and
what's not acceptable behavior.
"It's basically a continuation of "Training Day." It's not a remake;
it's 15 years later. I think it's such a relevant conversation to have
right now, especially with everything that's going on in the media. So
it'll be interesting to see what fans think and whose side they're on
and if they agree with the hero's actions, or if they think it's out of
line.”
She adds, "I think `Training Day’ is going to be controversial, because
at the end of the day, the heroes will usually get the results they
want, which is the bad guy being put away, getting them off the street.
How they go about doing it is the controversial part. It's the notion of
do the ends justify the means?"
The TV version of the R-rated movie will be risque.
She added: "We delve into race issues a lot. So far, we've dealt with
the Hispanics, Asian, Black community, White community. So nobody is
really safe on our show, because within every single race, there is an
issue that it's facing, so we kind of go after it."
