An insect control company, Terro, calculated that on average, humans
consume nearly 130,000 insect fragments found in coffee, over 90,000 bug
bits in wheat flour, nearly 6,000 insect fragments in chocolate, and
over 1,600 whole insects in frozen packages of broccoli.
Slimy, yet satisfying.
Overall, we could be consuming up to 140,000 bits of insect with our
food and drink. Terro based this info on the allowable maximums provided
by the Food and Drug Administration.
Just like a certain level of lead is to be expected in your food because it cannot be 100% eliminated
— it would cost more than feasible to attempt to eliminate the creepy
critters completely. The “allowable” levels are the maximum number of
bugs that present no harm to humans.
Some of the bugs include mealworms, roaches, grubs, thrips, and even
maggots. Aside from being delicacies on shows like “Fear Factor,” bugs
are actually consumed all over the world. Beetles being the most common,
but also insect eggs, grasshoppers, and even termites.
To make matters worse, rodent hair, rodent and insect excrement, and insect larvae can also be found in your food. Delicious.
