'Let’s Show Some Love and Care to Mentally Challenged'

NIGERIA / ABIA- Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, of Abia State on Wednesday called for special love and care to mentally challenged persons in the society.

Ikpeazu, in a message by his Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos, to mark the 2018 World
Mental Health Day, said people living with mental challenges should be given special care and attention rather than being stigmatised and isolated.

The governor commended his wife, Nkechi Ikpeazu, for her awareness and advocacy walk to commemorate the day.

"It is that time in the year, when we specially remember our brothers and sisters who are mentally challenged.

"It is important that all Abians join hands in creating the awareness that these people, in addition to their prescribed medications, require love and care from family and society.

"The ostracision from family and society that befalls them is unwarranted. We hope to build an effective healthcare system that promotes early detection of these mental disorders.

"Efforts are being made by government to rehabilitate our Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Mgboko and Psychiatric Nursing School in Umunnato," Ikpeazu said.
