The Challenges Facing a Firstborn Child

Parents are very excited when they are about to have their first baby. They make sure they have researched and purchased the most high tech car seat, crib, and high chair for their baby. The baby's room (the former office) is papered with a tiny duck and bunny print, and there’s a developmentally correct black and white mobile hanging over the crib. Once he is born, every cry, smile, and bowel movement receive great attention.

As she grows, her progress becomes extremely important to her parents and the rest of the family, especially if she is the first grandchild. New parents cherish their baby and above all, want her to be happy. They often have a

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was an exceptional leader

I walked into the east wing of The Palms shopping mall in Lekki, Lagos (popularly referred to as Shoprite); only to be buttoned-holed by a man trying to sell me a Honda Civic parked inside the hall. His sales pitch was that it was the first totally assembled Honda in Nigeria; built completely to Nigerian specifications. For example, unlike the classical Honda, the Nigeria model has a high clearance, being mindful of the potholes in Nigerian roads.

President Goodluck Jonathan speaks during his visit to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in Lagos, on March 12, 2015. President Jonathan visited the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on March 12, and launched a new online mobile platform, X-Gen, designed to increase local investment. The platform is targetted at increasing the number of local investors in the country and to enable about 30 millions domestic investors have access to the market. AFP PHOTO
I had no intention of buying a new car, least of all a Honda Accord.  Nevertheless, I could not fail to recognise that what he was touting is one of the many achievements of the Jonathan administration. In spite of the Buhari administration’s daily vilification of Jonathan, the achievements of his government continue to speak for themselves.
Jonathan put in place a policy that provided zero import-duty for completely knocked down vehicles; while discouraging the importation of already assembled cars; old or brand new, by the imposition of heavy import-duties. This propelled car manufacturers to set up assembly-plants in Nigeria that provide jobs for craftsmen, technicians, technologists, engineers, and other professionals across the value chain. The government also made it a policy to patronize locally-made and assembled cars.

CITN sets tax agenda for Buhari

Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has forwarded what the body believed is capable of ensuring the full implementation of the campaign promises of the president-elect, Mohammadu Buhari, even as he prepares to take over the reign of government in May 29.

In a congratulatory letter signed by the president of CITN, Mark Anthony Dike, and made available to TAX DIGEST, the apex tax body linked the victory of Buhari to the belief, trust and confidence that the good people of Nigeria had in the change mantra that featured prominently during the process leading to his election.

Why Obama Isn't On Fortune's Greatest Leaders List?

I grew up at a time when the President of the United States was routinely, and without irony, referred to as “the Leader of the Free World.” So it is disturbing to publish a list of the World’s Greatest Leaders that, for the second year in a row, excludes the current President.

Why Obama Isn't On Fortune's Greatest Leaders List
This isn’t a political statement. Fortune, like most of its readers, celebrates practical success, not ideological rigor. My own politics are militantly centrist, and I have a presidential voting record that has ricocheted between parties as their standard bearers have alternately seduced and disillusioned. I voted for Barack Obama once, in 2008, largely because of his call to unite blue states and red states behind a politics of hope. But it hasn’t happened. At home our politics are as divided—and our federal government is as dysfunctional—as they were when he took office. Abroad, the record is worse.
