I have little expectation from new FIFA President – Odegbami

Lagos – Segun Odegbami, a former Green Eagles players says he has little expectation from the new FIFA President, Gianni Infantino.

 Gianni Infantino was formerly secretary of UEFA before he was elected by 270 countries to lead FIFA on Feb. 26. Odegbami had initially bided for the coveted position of FIFA presidency before jettisoning the idea later, claiming he lacked support.

 Odegbami, nicknamed “Mathematical Segun Odegbami’’ because of his dribbling, precision passes and scoring ability in his playing days, was a member of the team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. He wore 46 caps for Nigeria between 1976 and 1982.

FIFA: Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini handed EIGHT-YEAR ban by FIFA ethics committee

The bans have been imposed by FIFA's ethics committee judge Hans-Joachim Eckert for a "disloyal payment" of 2million Swiss francs [£1.3million] to Platini, signed off by Blatter.

 

The disgraced FIFA president and UEFA chief had claimed the payment had been made in 2011 following a verbal agreement between the pair when Platini for Blatter from 1998 to 2002.

FIFA has been in crisis since May when 14 executives were indicted as part an FBI investigation into corruption, and last week 16 more officials were charged by US authorities.

 

President Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini are each serving 90-day suspensions while a Swiss criminal investigation into the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Russia and Qatar was launched earlier this year.

Fifa has provisionally suspended its president Sepp Blatter, secretary general Jerome Valcke and vice-president Michel Platini for 90 days. 

Former Fifa vice-president Chung Mong-joon has been banned for six years and fined 100,000 Swiss Francs (£67,000).

Diego Maradona to stand for FIFA Presidency

Diego Maradona will stand for the presidency of scandal-tainted FIFA presidency, a Uruguayan journalist who presents a television show with the Argentine football legend, said Monday.

“‘I am candidate’ are the words that Diego Maradona used when I asked him about the candidacy for the FIFA presidency,” journalist Victor Hugo Morales said on Twitter.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron is calling for Mr Blatter to resign but Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed Mr Blatter for a fifth term.
