Uyo — About 2,504 households from Itu,
Orukanam and and Uyo Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom state were
destroyed by flood last year, the state's Commissioner for Health, Dr
Bassey Antai , has said.
Antai yesterday told a delegation of the task force on flood disaster
intervention led by Dr. David Atuwo, at a press conference in Uyo, the
state capital, that though the state did not have an organized camp, the
displaced persons now reside in churches, schools and other areas,
creating over population and health problems.
"Diseases like malaria, diarrhea, upper respiratory diseases and malnutrition were reported in those camps" he said.
The commissioner said though no death was recorded, a team of medical
personnel from the ministry were drafted to the camps to help the
displaced persons in terms of drugs and food.
He added that about five primary health care centres and one secondary health centre were also affected.
