The opening statements in the trial of a Texas teenager charged with
murder were so horrific and shocking, members of the jury wept.
Reyes and another teen savagely beat Corriann Cervantes in a Houston
apartment as an attempt to sell their souls to the devil, authorities
said.
The girl begged for mercy as her attackers gouged out an eye, sexually
assaulted her, stabbed her multiple times with a screwdriver and bashed
her head and face in with the lid of toilet tank, Assistant Harris
County District Attorney John Jordan told jurors Monday.
"There were pieces of porcelain
"Whether or not the devil was involved, what happened in that apartment was sadistic and inhumane," he told distressed jurors, some of whom cried.
As for Reyes, "He said he had no regrets," the prosecutor said.
Cervantes died in February after a night of drinking and smoking pot went horribly, and irrevocably, wrong.
The two boys used the plastic rod from a set of window blinds to pluck
out the girl's eye, Jordan said. She also was stabbed with the
screwdriver multiple times in the face and torso, he said.
Accomplice Victor Alas strangled Cervantes with his belt so he, too, could sell his soul to Satan
the prosecutor said.
Cervantes' body was found four days after the attack in the vacant apartment.
Police have said the three had consensual sex before the violence
began. She tried to run and screamed, "Why are you doing this to me?" as
she was being tortured, authorities said.
Alas will be tried separately.
If convicted, he faces an automatic life sentence. But because he was a
juvenile at the time of the killing, he would be eligible for parole
after 40 years.
