The pizza man gave Pope Francis an immaculate Neapolitan conception.
A pizzeria owner bounded out to the popemobile during a procession in Naples
on Sunday and presented the pontiff with a specially made pie.
The pizza man hands off his special delivery to Francis’ outstretched
hands without intervention by security staff as onlookers shout with delight in
the cell phone footage from the scene.
The pizza featured yellow cherry tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella in a
nod to the Vatican colors of yellow and white, along with crust lettering that
spelled out “(Viva) il Papa” or “Long live the Pope
Cacialli, who told CNN that his father once gave President Bill Clinton
one of the restaurant’s pies during a 1994 trip to the city, expressed
amazement that the handoff took place at all.
“It's really hard for me to understand what I managed to do,"
Cacialli said, according to the news channel. "Giving a pizza you
made with your own hands to the Pope is very emotional. It's really hard for me
to express the value of this gesture for a man we really love and value, for a
beautiful person full of humanity.”
Despite the surprise delivery, the episode came just a week after another slice
of Papal-related pizza news. Francis, 78, surprised many observers when he told
a Mexican television station that he intends to rule no more than “four or five years” or “even
two or three.” Francis also confided that he misses noshing at his favorite
pizza spots in his native Argentina.
“The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being
recognized, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza,” he said. “In Buenos Aires, I was
a rover.”
