In a new survey from Durex, it's been revealed 40 per cent of 16-24s admitted they’d had sex with more than one person without a condom.
Avert - an international HIV and AIDS charity, based in the UK - revealed that as of the end of 2012, there were 27,798 diagnoses of AIDS in the UK, and 21,117 people living with HIV died.
Interviews with young women as part of the research found while they knew they should insist on using a condom every time, the reality is they are worried it could kill the mood.
This fear of rejection is a key barrier and Durex wants to bust myths about how boys actually feel when a girl insists on using a condom – 79 per cent of young men said it’s a turn on when a girl insists on a condom.
The new ‘When It’s On It’s On’ campaign from the condom company is using this message to flip the ‘condom moment’ from a situation that causes worry into something good for both parties.
Mark Pearson, Durex's Regional Brand Director, said: "Naturally safe sex should be both partners’ responsibility but what we learned from lots of young men during the research is that girls are very much the gatekeepers – what they say goes.
"One common reason we heard was that they worried that if they insisted on a condom they’d kill the mood or put the guy off."
He added: "This fear of rejection or killing the mood is a key barrier for many young women but we found out that this most often isn’t the case at all. In fact the opposite is true."
The campaign is being launched with a hard hitting new film which focuses on groups of young people (one male group, one female group).
It brings to life the genuine surprise among the girls when they realise what the boys REALLY say about sex and using a condom when they think there are no girls around to hear them.
