The new fat maps
of America are out and we're as chubby as ever. According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every state had an adult
obesity rate of at least 20%. The slimmest was Colorado, where 20.2% of
people were obese, and the fattest was Louisiana, with 36.2%.
The numbers come from the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System, an ongoing phone survey that asks people in the U.S.
and three
territories about a variety of health measures, including height and
weight. Although a trend analysis is in the works, the CDC did break
down the rates by race and ethnicity. Overall, obesity was highest among
blacks at 38.1%, then Hispanics with 31.9% and whites at 27.6%.
Although as a nation we're still pretty fat, researchers found reason to
be hopeful. "Four states showed modest declines," noted Capt. Heidi
Blanck, chief of Obesity Prevention and Control. "We're cautiously
optimistic," she told the Daily News. So here's to you, Minnesota,
Montana, New York and Ohio! Keep dieting, everyone else!
