Daily Checkup: Sleep apnea has serious consequences for up to 20 million Americans; many remain undiagnosed

The Specialist:
As the director of the sleep surgery program at Mount Sinai, Dr. Fred Lin treats patients who have complicated cases of sleep apnea that require surgery. Lin works with more than 500 patients a year with sleep apnea.

Dr. Fred Lin, director of the sleep surgery program at Mount Sinai, says snoring can be a red flag.

Who’s at risk:
About 50% of Americans snore while they’re sleeping. And for millions of people, that snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea.
“Sleep apnea is a form of sleep-disordered breathing in which the airway becomes narrowed as the tissues and muscles surrounding it relax,” says Dr. Fred Lin, director of the sleep surgery program at Mount Sinai. “The brain corrects for this suffocation by jerking the patient between deep sleep and light sleep, and even momentary awakening, though the individual doesn’t necessarily remember it.” Some 18-20 million Americans are living with sleep apnea, though doctors estimate that 80-90% of them remain undiagnosed.

When it comes to convincing anti-vaxxers, doctors’ communication skills need work: study

Training physicians in communication skills may not make it any easier for them to convince vaccine-resistant parents to inoculate their babies, a study suggests.

Doctors may need more intensive training to win over anti-vaxxers.
Researchers invited physicians at 30 clinics in Washington state to attend 45-minute classes led by a pediatric immunization expert and health educator. But doctors who attended the sessions were no better at lowering vaccine resistance than their colleagues at 26 other clinics where training wasn’t offered.

New York parents who oppose vaccines for kids may be required to seek proof they were warned by doctor

ALBANY — A Queens state senator is set to introduce a bill that would require parents who don't want to vaccinate their kids to prove they’ve been counseled by a physician.
“I believe in science, and the science is clear that vaccines are the right answer to help our children avoid disease,” said Democrat Michael Gianaris, the bill sponsor.

State Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas is pushing the bill in the Assembly. The legislation, which will be introduced Monday, would require parents who want to opt out to submit to their kid’s school an affidavit signed by a physician saying that they discussed the medical risks of skipping vaccinations.

“The idea is that education will help overcome the anecdotal gossip that is threatening the health of kids around the country now,” Gianaris said.

He added: “It’s no coincidence that measles and whooping cough are at their highest levels in decades at a time when parents opting out of vaccinating their kids is at its highest level in decades.”
The legislation is being carried in the Assembly by Aravella Simotas (D-Queens). The mother of a toddler, Simotas says her child is up to date on all vaccines.
