THE African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) on Sunday reaffirmed that it had confidence in President Jacob Zuma, despite allegations that the politically connected Gupta family were influencing Cabinet appointments.

 

This follows a difficult week where allegations surfaced that the family, said to be close to Mr Zuma, had been offering Cabinet positions.
"The appointment of ministers and deputy ministers is the sole prerogative of the President of the Republic, in line with the Constitution," ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe told reporters in Pretoria.
"To this end, the ANC continues to confirm its full confidence in our president."
He said the NEC had "frank and robust" discussions on the allegations surrounding the Guptas.

New National Shipping line will attract 5m jobs, says expert

Auto Accident: Tears as Minister, Ocholi, wife, Son die in Auto Crash

The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Mr. James Ocholi (SAN); his wife, Blessing; and son, Joshua, on Sunday died in a road crash along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, 57 kilometres to their Kaduna destination.

It was learnt that the Sport Utility Vehicle in which the family travelled in, had a burst tyre on the highway, leading to the crash.

 

Ocholi, who hailed from Ogbabede-Abocho in the Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, and his third child were said to have died on the spot after the Prado-Jeep had a burst tyre in the rear and somersaulted several times.

It was gathered that the minister’s SUV ran into other vehicles in his convoy.

A critically injured Blessing died at the Doka Government Hospital, Kaduna, around 4pm on Sunday.

The driver and aide de camp, who were also rushed to the clinic, were later brought to the National Hospital, Abuja at 7.45pm for treatment.

The Kaduna State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Francis Udoma, said the accident occurred about 57 kilometres away from Kaduna.

Udoma confirmed that the minister and the son died on the spot, adding that some aides to the late minister also sustained injuries.

Moody's cuts China outlook to negative

US ratings agency Moody's has cut its outlook for China from "stable" to "negative".

While reaffirming its current debt rating, the agency warned that reforms were needed to avoid a downgrade. 

Moody's said the change in outlook was based on expectations that Beijing's fiscal strength would continue to decline.

The negative outlook comes on the heels of fresh data suggesting China's economy is continuing to lose steam.

RBS shares slide as losses continue

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has reported a loss of £1.98bn for 2015, its eighth year of annual losses. 

 

RBS shares fell to a three-year low on the news, and remain well below the price the government paid for an 84% stake to save the bank in 2008.

The bank, which came close to collapse at the height of the financial crisis, is still setting aside billions to cover past mistakes and fines. 

75-Year-old Pensioner Slumps, Dies During Screening in Edo

EDO- There was outrage on Tuesday by pensioners of the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State after a local government pensioner, identified as Sunday Oboite, slumped and died during screening.

It was gathered that the late pensioner, who retired from the Works department of the council, was at the secretariat for screening which the council had directed the pensioners to undertake before they would be paid their 10-month pension arrears.

UK Expert to train Calabar Garment Factory Workers

Ahead of its upcoming inauguration in March, the British Government has expressed its readiness to train the needed manpower for the take-off of the Calabar garment factory.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright, disclosed this while on an inspection of the ongoing work at the project site.

 

According to a statement from the Cross River State Government, the envoy whose country is known for great expertise in garment making, lauded the efforts of Governor Ben Ayade in initiating the project.

He said that he would be willing to bring in expatriates from Britain to train the factory’s workforce in some critical areas of textile making to build the needed capacity and create the desired jobs.

Cosatu state to Capitulate

THE government has once again caved in to trade union pressure by agreeing to a two-year delay in the introduction of the compulsory annuitisation of two-thirds of provident fund savings on retirement.

 
This is the second time that the Treasury has unsuccessfully tried to implement the provision and then backtracked in the face of strong opposition from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).

The proposed postponement was tabled by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan at an urgent meeting on Monday with the social partners of the National Economic Development and Labour Council.
Delegations from the Association for Savings and Investment SA, which is strongly opposed to any postponement, and Business Unity SA were also present. Mr Gordhan is expected to announce details of the postponement in his budget vote speech next Wednesday.

Between January 1 and February 12 this year, an interval of about six weeks, the Federal Government made over N18.3bn as savings from the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit and House Hold Kerosene.

The government officially stopped subsidy on PMS, popularly known as petrol, on January 1, 2016, while on January 23 this year, it also ended the subsidy regime on kerosene, according to the pricing templates for both commodities obtained from the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency.

Nigerians’ll starve to death by 2050, if… —Presidency

ABUJA— The Presidency,  yesterday, raised alarm that Nigerians would starve to death by 2050 if nothing was done to ensure an all year round farming.

It also said with the rate the country was going, the population would by 2050 rise to 509 million.

 According to the Federal Government, the present mode of farming will not sustain the increasing population in the country.

It noted that there was the urgent need for all major stakeholders to work towards improving mechanized farming and irrigation, to ensure an all year farming to avert the problem.

“Besides, by 2050, Nigeria population will be very close to 500 million at the current rate of growth. This is just 34 years from now. If we carry on at the current rate of one crop per year, with very low mechanization, Nigerians run the risk of starving to death.

The UK tax authorities' agreement with Google has fuelled a "sense of injustice" that big businesses receive preferential treatment, he said.

His comments come a week after Chancellor George Osborne called the settlement a "major success".

Google said it was in favour of reforms to make international tax clearer.

However, shadow chancellor John McDonnell warned the fallout from the tax row had damaged Google's brand.

"The reputational damage to Google, I think, is immense," he said, and suggested the "saving they have made in tax is not worth the reputation damage they have had".

Mr McDonnell also repeated a call for Google and HMRC to release details of how the agreement was struck.

The minister stated this at the All Progressives Congress, APC national headquarters in Abuja where he fielded questions from journalists on how the ministry is carrying out its mandate of job creation so far.

He also spoke on the federal government’s plans to employ non-trained teacher graduates as teachers, for which President Muhammadu Buhari spoke on during his budget presentation at the National Assembly.

The APC government had during the electioneering campaigns promised to pay N5, 000 stipend per month to indigent Nigerians and to create employment.

According to Ocholi, the Teacher Conversion Programme is meant to mop up graduates who do not have employment but possess degrees in relevant areas that can be used to teach secondary school students.

Folks, in one of my opinion pieces welcoming President Mahama to office as the substantive President of Ghana at the end of Election 2012, I made it clear that he could help our democracy grow better if he used his communication skills to advantage. In that sense, I suggested that he should adopt a weekly radio address approach to make his administration more proactive and relevant to the people in terms of public policy and government's handling of affairs.

 

I premised my arguments on the fact that a President who knew how to use "communication" to share information with the public stood a good chance of remaining connected with the people. I said also that in our kind of situation, using the weekly radio address to throw light on the government's activities could help him deflate political opponents and make his government visible. It would also ensure that questions nagging the citizens would be factored into such weekly radio addresses and answered.

Lo and behold, nothing of the sort has been institutionalized to date, which makes me wonder why President Mahama won't take advantage of his communication skills to improve government-citizen relations.
Instead, an erratic, knee-jerk approach was adopted, using the sterile "Meet-the-Press" approach, which ended up embarrassing the government instead. That measure ended in smoke.

LASSA fever: Death toll rises to 41 from 93 suspected cases —Minister

Abuja— The Federal Government disclosed, yesterday, that Lassa fever has claimed 41 lives from 93 reported cases in 10 states of the country even as the Senate has summoned the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, over the outbreak of the disease.

 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Federal Government, last Friday, put the death toll at 40 out of 86 reported cases of Lassa fever outbreak in same 10 states. The number of the suspected cases also rose from 86 last week to 93.

South African in extra time in terms of meeting US’s Agoa deadline

THE US government has not yet blocked SA’s agricultural products from receiving the duty free benefits of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Monday.
