KWARA....In the past, traditional rulers stay in their different palaces to expect influential people in their domains and their subjects in general to attract development projects to their areas.
What is being practised now and actually bringing desired dividends,
particularly among some traditional rulers in Nigeria, is for the traditional
rulers to ginger their people towards initiating or collaborating with the
development plans of the town or cities being thought out by such monarchs.
On Saturday, May 4, 2013, all roads led to Isanlu Isin in the Isin
local government area of Kwara State, as the traditional ruler of the area, Oba
Solomon Olugbenga Oloyede, used the occasion of his 50th birthday to stage a
fund raising to build a befitting modern palace for the ancient town as well as
confer traditional chieftaincy titles on eminent dignitaries in various parts
of the country.
According to a Yoruba saying, oniruuru obe laari ni’jo iku erin,
literally meaning that knives of different shapes are seen when an elephant is
killed. Thus, the day was memorable with various happenings at the venue of the
celebration.
Traditional chiefs of the area, most of whom are said to be cocoa
merchants, dressed in embroidered brown traditional ‘aso oke’, while indigenes
of the town adorned themselves with ankara uniform dresses specially selected
for the occasion.
Different stands at the venue of Oba Oloyede”s 50th birthday also
displayed traditional artefacts like royal beads, walking sticks, and other
local items as well as indigenous food items of the area like aadun andoyin.
The typical and serene agrarian community came alive as indigenes of
the area from far and near, turned out in large numbers with their friends and
associates to celebrate their traditional rulers. It was a show of one love,
unity and purposefulness.
